Yingge is a major centre for the production of pottery and ceramics. It is probably the best spot around Taipei to see traditional hand crafts being produced and also a great place to buy souvenirs. Most of the shops can be found in Old Street (老街) which is a car free walking area.

The Taipei County Yingge Ceramics Museum (臺北縣立鶯歌陶瓷博物館) is outstanding and shows the integral part the ceramics industry has played in Taiwan's history. All the displays are clearly labelled in Chinese and English. The building itself is also interesting for its modern architectural design. The museum is open 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM from Tuesday to Friday adn 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday. 

Yingge is about half an hour by train from Taipei. You could easily combine a trip to Yingge with a visit to Sanxia. Sanxia is just across the river and can be reached by bus or taxi from Yingge.
