We're planning on traveling southern Taiwan for 5 days, 2 days in Tainan, 1 in Kaohsiung and 2 in Kending. Can you recommend some hotspots, hostels and nightlife in that area?

There are tourist information centers in both the Tainan and Kaohsiung train stations if you're arriving in normal working hours.
Tainan restaurants, nightlife and places that have English you can find on the Tainan map in http://www.itainan.org/ . nightlife is mainly "The Orient" and "La sight".
Kaohsiung Insider and Taiwan Fun are okay resources for Kaohsiung - http://kaohsiunginsider.xemzi.com/ . Plenty of nightlife and things to do.
