Train travel in Taiwan

Hello.

I'm traveling to Taiwan for the first time starting 15 August 2009. I'm
having difficulty making train reservations online, and when I called they
spoke no English. I want to travel around the country and have done some
research so that I know the dates, times and train numbers. Do you have
any suggestions?

Thank you for your time,

EK

It is often possible to get a reserved seat at short notice. The main difficulties are booking trains to Hualien and Taitung as well as on Friday or Sunday nights. The HSR has reduced the pressure on the west coast lines (i.e. between Taipei and Kaohsiung)

I wouldn't worry about it too much. You can also consider travelling by bus which is usually cheaper than the train.

You can use the following to help figure out the train schedules

On weekend, for the busier, high-traffic routes reserve. During the week outside of rush-hour, last-minute walk-up to window or vendor box is fine.
