i sent application for doctorate in the NCKU today (chemistry/material science)
and next week i will send application to the NTHU & NCTU.
i tried to search for a scholarship and i found
some scholarships are not available in spring semester and the other are given after the student is accepted to the university.
do you more about doctorate scholarship?
can a student survive with 20,000 taiwanese dollar per month ?

Scholarships and cost of living (NCKU-Tainan, NCTU-Hsinchu)

Hi,

As far as I know all NCKU international students have tuition waiver and free dorm (not very impressive, I rent an apartment), so atleast you won't be spending money on that. There should be research assistantships available for about 8-15000NT$ a month, but this you would have to talk to the departments for. I strongly recommend you do that BEFORE you come here to make sure.

20,000NT$ should be okay in Tainan, even if you rent an apartment (~4000-6000NT$ for the low-end yet comfortable student ones). Food, hanging out and such are all relatively cheap, compared to Taipei or any part of Israel, but you'd probably have to think abit about how you spend your money. You'll get the hang of it after the first month. I would suggest that you plan for a bit more money just for the first month start, things like get a scooter, putting down a deposit on an apartment, and paying various TBDs you probably have no idea about.

As far as I know the NCTU PhD scholarships are a bit nicer (25000NT$ was it?), but Xinzhu is slightly more expensive than Tainan. If exact sciences is what you're after, those up in Xinzhu might be more interesting for you, and the general "international" life in the area, not too far from Taipei, might be more appealing.

Good luck.

NCTU versus NCKU

i was accepted to the NCKU (Material Science) and by 3~ week i would know whther i was accepted to the NCTU (Applied Chemistry or Material Science)
Which university to choose ?
which one has better academic reputation (in these depratemnts?
in which their is a better social life/more foreigners ?
which city is nicer ?
bureaucracy/ another problem with the staff ?

NCTU - NCKU : considerations

You might want to take a look at this : http://www.filination.com/blog/2007/06/27/taiwanese-universities-ncku-vs...

Considerations :

NCTU is an IT oriented university, NCKU is a comprehensive university.

NCKU's general reputation is better, NCTU's exact sciences is better.

NCKU has alot more international students (reaching 1000 soon), but most of them are in the international business school. NCKU OIA has been becoming better with time to handle the international students, but there are actually too many international students for the current infrastructure.

When it comes to just foreigners, there are alot more international businessman and expats living in Hsinchu than in Tainan and they're usualy far more upscale and well off. This also means Hsinchu is more expensive than Tainan but less convinient.

To me, Tainan is far more interesting than Hsinchu, yet Hsinchu is far closer to Taipei and other interesting northern spots.

There's Hsinchu Science Park and Tainan Science Park, Hsinchu being the leading one. NCTU, as far as I know, works closer with their science park.

NCTU and Tsinghua also work together and they're side by side, you should be able to take courses from either.

Confusing? I know. I strongly recommend you go to each one for a week, live in campus, meet people, attend classes, and then decide.

Let me konw if you need any other info.
