English teacher moving to Taiwan

I am an english teacher on the move to taiwan. I am about to sign a year-contract but I am a bit afraid of it. My wage there will be around 6.500(local currency) and I am not sure I can get by with this amount.

So my question is, will I be able to survive on this wage???

Could I have a comfortable life at this amount?

I don't speak any mandarin or chinese. Is that a big problem??

I assume you mean NT$650 per

I assume you mean NT$650 per hour. This is about US$20. It is around the average for foreign English teachers in Taiwan.

How much you earn will depend on how many hours a week you teach. If you teach around 20 hours a week you will earn a bit over NT$50k per month. If you get your hours up to 25 then you will make around NT$65k a month.

Whether this is enough really depends on your circumstances and spending (or saving) habits. Some people earn NT$50k and manage to save NT$20k of that. Others earn more, but still complain they never have enough money.

Not knowing Mandarin will make your life frustrating here at times, but you can get by without it. Some foreigners spend years here without learning more than a few words and seem to be able to survive perfectly well. I must add that living in Taipei it would be easier to get by with English only. The other big cities might be OK too, but if you are out in a rural area then you might find life difficult.
