Betelnut girls
While visiting this site I came across the "recent popular content" section that usually features link about Betelnut beauty. I can see how those are popular. 
I've never seen that before anywhere else and I find this whole phenomena extraordinary. How did this happen, and in Taiwan of all places... how is this being accepted by the Taiwanese society?

Betel nut girls seem to be a major source of fascination for many in Taiwan. It is not so surprising really. Young women wearing sexy outfits tend to attract attention anywhere.
I think there are a lot of misconceptions about betel nut girls. People get excited about the lack of clothes they are wearing, but never really look beyond that. Some questions to consider are: Why are so many young women employed at this job? Why is betel nut so popular and unregulated by the government despite its detrimental impacts on health?
As for how it is accepted by Taiwanese society there are a variety of opinions. Some consider it a moral outrage, others think it is fun or interesting. If you asked a dozen people what they thought I am sure they would all say something different.
I know a lot of visitors to this part of the site probably just want to look at the pictures, but also check out some of the articles that are linked to. These give a lot more background and insight into some of the issues.
