What are the best places to visit in Taiwan? Taiwan has a wide range of natural, historical and cultural attractions.
For natural beauty it would be hard to go past Taroko Gorge. For culture and history I would pick the city of Tainan. There are many other places that are worth visiting, too.

Taiwan's Central Cross-Island Highway
No trip to Taiwan is complete without traveling Taiwan's Central Cross-Island Highway. The spectacular array of scenery takes visitors through rugged mountain peaks, alpine forests, lush valleys of palm trees, steep cliffs, rushing rivers, rocky streams, hot springs, lakes and seas.
The highway branches into two forks at Tai Yu Ling. The southern fork will take you over Hehuan Mountain down past Ching Jing, Wushe, Puli and on to Sun Moon Lake. The eastern fork leads travelers through the marble magesty of Toroko Gorge and on to Taiwan's east coast, where it eventually meets up with the Suao-Hualien Highway.

Carrie, it sounds like an amazing trip. It is quite a while since I have visited Taiwan's high mountains, but I must get back there some time soon.
